Hatha Yoga Benefits Philosophy

Yoga is the practice of inner peace.

The word yoga means Union or Oneness. It is a philosophical system of physical, mental and spiritual development that originated in India at least 5000 years ago, with its goal being to connect or ‘unite’ with the Universal Self. This state of connectedness or Oneness, as opposed to feeling an “otherness” or “separateness”, brings a sense of harmony and joy, and enables one to be at peace with oneself and the world.

There are many different paths to this Union. HATHA YOGA, the method of physical discipline, is one such path. It comprises everything that man needs for the perfection of his health and longevity – correct breathing, posture, exercise, diet, physical and mental relaxation, and hygiene. It can become a more complete yoga practice in itself when aspects of the meditative path of RAJA YOGA are included.

The main aim of HATHA YOGA is to prepare the body and mind for higher spiritual practices and meditation. Postures, breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques help to free blocked energy, and balance the flow of energy in our beings. It releases physical, mental and emotional tensions and stress, balances the emotions and purifies the mind. The physical body is purified from toxins, waste matter and disease, making it strong, firm and supple so it will remain seated steadily and comfortably for meditation. This leads to improved physical health, vitality and energy; mental calm, clarity and focus; and a greater sense of inner peace.

HATHA YOGA encourages a better balance between the functioning of an individual’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. When one is able to reconnect with every part of oneself (body, mind and spirit) it leads to a greater sense of the connection to the world around one.

Yoga can be practiced by all ages, genders and cultures. It is a philosophy and not a religion or creed, and therefore will not interfere with any individual’s personal spiritual practice, but will rather serve to enhance it. It is a practical tool that ultimately leads to a greater understanding and accepting of oneself and helps facilitate the journey of self-integration.

"Yoga is 99 percent practice, one percent theory."
