One of the most well-known philosophical yoga texts is that of “Patanjali’s Sutras”. The sage Patanjali defines yoga as “controlling the fluctuations of the mind” (yogah citta-vrtti-nirodhah) - the ability to direct and focus mental activity in one direction. When this is achieved, the Universal Self will reveal itself.
He outlines a path of practice consisting of the following eight spiritual practices, called Ashtanga Yoga (“Ashtanga” means eight limbs).

  1. Yama - Abstinences or moral codes (these are nonviolence, truthfulness, honesty, moderation, non-covetousness)
  2. Niyama - Observances, self-purification and study (these are cleanliness, contentment, discipline, scriptural and self-study, surrender to God or a higher Being)
  3. Asana - Posture
  4. Pranayama - Breath control
  5. Pratyahara - Sense withdrawal or control
  6. Dharana - Concentration
  7. Dhyana - Meditation
  8. Samadhi - Contemplation

The first four limbs are considered to be external purification practices, and the last four are internally oriented. However, these branches are all interdependent and support each other. Although the first two steps to controlling the mind are the practice of the yamas and niyamas, this is not possible when the body and mind are weak and blocked by obstacles. A well-established asana practice is necessary for making the body strong and healthy, and for the correct practice of pranayama. This enables the body and sense organs to be controlled, and then the mind can become steady and controlled. Improved mind control is a key to the development of the yamas and niyamas. Once these are firmly rooted, the last four internally oriented limbs will spontaneously evolve over time.
